They encounter Broken Nose and his wary tribe. Mistrust runs deep. The blight's shadow looms, forcing a tense, cautious interaction between the two peoples.
The air, once crisp and alive with the scent of pine and damp earth, now carried a faint, sickly sweetness, a perfume of decay that clung to the back of my throat. It was in the way the leaves, even the hardy ones of the mountain ash, were curling inward, their vibrant green giving way to a bruised, mottled brown. It was in the silence of the birds, their usual dawn chorus replaced by an unsettling hush. I, Anya, SkyEyes to my people, felt the land’s distress as if it were my own flesh, a deep ache settling in my bones.
Kaelen, Thunder Cloud, felt it too. His visions, once clear as a mountain spring, were now clouded by the creeping sickness. He’d spoken of it in hushed tones, his eyes dark with a foreboding I couldn’t fully grasp, though I felt its icy tendrils brush against my own spirit. The elders, their faces etched with the wisdom of generations, had seen it too. Clay Basket, her voice a low hum of ancient knowing, had called us before the council fire, the flames casting dancing shadows on their solemn faces.
“The land weeps,” she had said, her gaze piercing, “and its tears are poison. The spirits whisper of a cure, a legend whispered on the wind, a gift from the heart of the mountains. You, SkyEyes, with your keen eyes that see the hidden paths, and you, Thunder Cloud, whose spirit walks with the ancestors, are chosen to seek it.”
