The air itself seemed to hold its breath. Not the crisp, clean inhale of a mountain morning, but a strained, shallow gasp, as if the very lungs of the world were struggling. I felt it first in my fingertips, a subtle tremor that had nothing to do with the biting wind. The pines, usually so vibrant, their needles a deep, resonant green, were tinged with a sickly yellow, their branches drooping like weary arms. The earth, once firm and yielding beneath my moccasins, now felt brittle, cracked, as if it were slowly turning to dust. It was a sorrow that seeped into my bones, a quiet weeping that echoed the silent suffering of the land.

Kaelen, his gaze fixed on the horizon, felt it too. I saw it in the tightening of his jaw, the way his powerful shoulders seemed to sag under an invisible weight. He had spoken of visions, of shadows lengthening, of a sickness that would drain the lifeblood from our home. Now, the whispers of his dreams were beginning to manifest in the waking world, a chilling prophecy unfolding before our very eyes.

We walked in a silence that was heavy with unspoken fears, the rhythmic crunch of our boots on the parched earth the only sound to break the growing stillness. The elders had sent us, their faces etched with a sorrow that mirrored my own, their words a desperate plea. “The Blight,” Elder Clay Basket had said, her voice raspy with age and worry, her hands gnarled like the roots of an ancient tree. “It spreads. The spirits weep. You, SkyEyes, with your keen eye for the hidden paths, and you, Thunder Cloud, chosen by the spirits themselves, must seek the cure. The legends speak of it, a balm for the dying land, hidden beyond the Whispering Falls.”
