The air, once crisp with the promise of a new season, now hung heavy and stagnant, a thick blanket woven from fear and the scent of decay. I watched from the ridge, my gaze sweeping across the valley that had been our cradle, our sanctuary, for generations untold. The vibrant greens that should have been bursting forth were muted, tinged with a sickly yellow, a pallor that mirrored the unease settling in the pit of my stomach. It was more than just a failing harvest, more than a harsh winter’s lingering grip. This was a sickness of the earth itself, a slow, insidious creep that stole the lifeblood from the soil. My fingers tightened around the smooth wood of my hunting bow, the familiar weight a small comfort against the rising tide of dread.

Beside me, Kaelen stood like a sentinel carved from the mountain stone, his gaze fixed on the same blighted landscape. His usual calm was fractured, a subtle tremor in the set of his jaw, the way his eyes darted, as if searching for answers in the swirling dust motes dancing in the weak sunlight. I knew those eyes. They held the weight of the spirits, the burden of visions that painted a grim future. He had spoken of them, of a darkness that threatened to consume us, of a journey that would test us to our very souls. And now, as the land itself cried out in its suffering, I felt a stirring within me, a quiet certainty that my path, so long defined by the silent hunt, was now intertwined with his, with the fate of our people.

The elders, their faces etched with the wisdom of countless winters, had spoken. Their words, like ancient runes, had laid bare the urgency of our plight. Clay Basket, her voice a soft rustle of dried leaves, had looked at me, her eyes holding a depth of understanding that both soothed and unsettled me. “SkyEyes,” she had said, her hand, gnarled and strong, resting on my arm, “the spirits whisper of a cure, a legend buried deep within the heart of the world. You and Thunder Cloud must seek it.” The weight of those words settled upon me, a mantle of responsibility I was still learning to bear. Doubts, like shadows, flickered at the edges of my mind. Was I truly strong enough? Could my skills as a huntress, honed on the whisper of the wind and the track of the deer, suffice against a foe that withered the very roots of our existence?
