The wind, once a playful companion, now carried a mournful sigh through the skeletal branches of the aspens. It whispered of things lost, of lifeblood seeping away, and I, Anya, felt it deep within my bones, a chilling echo of the land’s own fading pulse. My eyes, usually so clear and sharp, felt clouded by a gathering unease. The deer, once plump and vibrant, now bore a gauntness that mirrored the wilting leaves. The very air seemed thinner, laced with a subtle bitterness that clung to the back of my throat. It was more than a sickness; it was a wound, a gaping tear in the fabric of our world. Rivers that once flowed freely now dwindled to trickles, their banks choked with a greyish dust. The forests, once a verdant sanctuary, were thinning, their vibrant greens surrendering to a sickly yellow. We had navigated treacherous passes, our boots finding purchase on scree that threatened to give way with every step. We had slept under a sky that seemed to weep stars, their light dimmed by the pervasive gloom.
