Chapter 14
A Difficult Choice
Torn by the sacrifice, they seek guidance. Clay Basket's words about prophecy resurface. The weight of the decision presses heavily on their hearts and their love.
The air hung thick with a sorrow that had nothing to do with the coming winter. It clung to the roughspun wool of my tunic, to the coarse strands of my hair, and most stubbornly, to the hollow space in my chest where my courage usually resided. Beside me, Kaelen’s hand, calloused from the bowstring and the spear haft, was a warm anchor in the chilling uncertainty. We stood at the edge of the sacred grove, the ancient trees that had witnessed the birth of our people, their bark etched with the stories of generations. Now, even their leaves seemed to droop, a muted green, as if the very life force of the world was being leached away.
The Bloom. We had found it, nestled deep within the Sunken Caves, a jewel of luminescence pulsating with the promise of healing. But the whispers that accompanied its glow were not of salvation, but of a profound, tearing cost. The spirits, Kaelen had said, their voices a murmur in his mind, demanded a sacrifice. Not of blood, not of life, but of something far more precious, something woven into the very fabric of our being.
“Anya,” Kaelen’s voice was a low rumble, the sound of distant thunder, a sound I had come to cherish above all others. He didn’t look at me, his gaze fixed on the distant, mist-shrouded peaks, the same peaks that had always stood as silent sentinels of our world. “The spirits are clear. The Bloom can only be coaxed to release its full power if a deep, abiding connection is severed. A bond that has been forged in love and shared purpose.”
