The air in the hollow, usually alive with the rustle of leaves and the chatter of unseen creatures, felt heavy, suffocating. It was a stillness that pressed in, not of peace, but of held breath. The heart of the Bloom, the very essence of its vibrant life, pulsed weakly now, its petals, once a riot of impossible color, dulled to a bruised twilight. We had found it, Kaelen and I, nestled deep within the earth’s embrace, a secret whispered by the ancient stones. But the whispers that followed were not of triumph.
Kaelen knelt beside the dying flower, his brow furrowed, his hand hovering just above its wilting form. His eyes, usually so clear, reflecting the boundless sky, were clouded with a turmoil I had only seen in the deepest storms. He had felt it, the spirits’ sorrow, the earth’s final sigh, long before we reached this place. His visions, once a guiding light, now seemed to flicker, casting long, distorted shadows.
“It is fading, Anya,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble, like distant thunder. “The Bloom… it is dying before it can heal.”
