The air grew thick, heavy with the scent of damp earth and something ancient, something that hummed with a power I hadn’t felt since the deepest ceremonies. We had followed the winding deer trails, the whispers of the wind, and the ache in Kaelen’s spirit to this place, a grove that seemed to breathe with a life of its own. Sunlight, fractured by a canopy of leaves so old they seemed to hold the memories of seasons past, dappled the moss-covered ground. Towering trees, their bark gnarled like the faces of our ancestors, stood sentinel, their branches reaching towards the heavens as if in silent supplication.

Kaelen walked beside me, his hand finding mine, his grip firm and reassuring. His eyes, usually so clear and bright, held a new depth, a flicker of awe mixed with a familiar apprehension. He had spoken of visions, of a presence that guarded the heart of the land, and I felt it now, a palpable energy that prickled my skin. It wasn’t a hostile force, not yet, but it was undeniably powerful, ancient, and watchful.

We emerged into a clearing, a circular space where the trees parted to reveal a single, magnificent oak. Its trunk was impossibly wide, its branches spread like the arms of a benevolent giant, and from its lowest bough hung a single, luminous flower, its petals the colour of a twilight sky. It pulsed with a gentle light, a beacon in the shadowed grove. This was it. This was the heart of what we sought.
