Chapter 10
Whispers of Doubt
Anya questions her own abilities. Kaelen wrestles with the visions' burden. The journey's toll weighs on their spirits, testing their inner strength and faith.
The wind, once a playful companion, now seemed to sigh with weariness through the skeletal branches of the pines. Each gust carried with it the faint, acrid scent of decay, a perfume that clung to the air like a shroud. I pulled my fur-lined cloak tighter, the familiar prickle of its wool a small comfort against the creeping chill that had nothing to do with the season. My gaze swept across the valley, the familiar contours of the land now blurred by a subtle, insidious greyness. The vibrant greens of summer had leached away, replaced by a muted palette of ochre and rust, as if the very earth had begun to bleed.
It was a sickness I felt in my bones, a resonance with the dying pulse of the land. My name, SkyEyes, had been given to me for the clarity with which I saw the world, for the way my vision could pierce the mists and track the elusive elk through the densest forest. But lately, my sight felt clouded, not by fog, but by a pervasive unease. The deer, once plump and swift, now moved with a listlessness that mirrored the wilting foliage. The berries, usually bursting with sweetness, were shriveled and bitter. I, Anya, the huntress, felt the earth’s pain as if it were my own, and it gnawed at me.
Kaelen, my Kaelen, walked beside me, his stride long and measured, a silent sentinel against the encroaching gloom. His eyes, usually alight with the fire of the spirits, held a deeper, more troubled glow. He had been gifted with visions, glimpses into the unseen currents of our world, and lately, those visions were filled with shadows. He spoke of a creeping darkness, a blight that would consume everything if left unchecked. He was the Chosen Warrior, his path etched by the ancestors, and I saw the weight of that destiny pressing down on him, a burden he bore with a stoic grace that both awed and worried me.
