The air grew thin and sharp as we ascended, each breath a sting in my lungs. The Serpent’s Pass, they called it, and the name was a promise of the coiled danger that lay ahead. Jagged teeth of stone gnawed at the sky, and the wind, a relentless sculptor, had carved a narrow path, barely wide enough for a single soul to tread. Below, the world fell away in a dizzying expanse of grey rock and swirling mist, a place where even the bravest eagle dared not venture.

Kaelen, ever the steady presence, walked ahead, his movements sure-footed despite the treacherous ground. His hand, calloused from bowstring and sword hilt, was a constant, unspoken offer of support. I followed, my own senses heightened, scanning the rock faces for loose scree, for the telltale signs of a hidden crevice. My hunter’s eyes, usually so accustomed to the subtle shifts of forest and plain, now strained against the stark, unforgiving canvas of the mountains. Every shadow seemed to writhe, every gust of wind a whisper of unseen threats.

“It’s a tomb, this place,” I murmured, my voice swallowed by the wind’s roar.
