Chapter 5
Justice's Gaze
Detective Isabella Rossi, sharp and incorruptible, investigates the uncle's murder. She senses a deeper conspiracy, her gaze beginning to fall upon Adrian.
Detective Isabella Rossi’s sharp eyes scanned the cavernous office, a mausoleum of mahogany and stale cigar smoke. The air still clung to the phantom presence of Silas Bellandi, a scent that no amount of industrial-strength cleaner could entirely erase. It had been three days since his brutal, public murder, and the city, usually a vibrant symphony of honking horns and hurried footsteps, seemed to hold its breath, a hushed anticipation of what – or who – would rise from the ashes. Rossi, however, felt no anticipation, only a cold, professional certainty that this was no random act of violence. The murder weapon, a garrote fashioned from an impossibly fine silk, lay bagged and tagged, a testament to a chilling intimacy. This wasn’t a crime of passion; it was a message, delivered with surgical precision.
“Anything, Detective?” Sergeant Miller, a man whose face seemed perpetually etched with the weariness of the city’s underbelly, stood by the door, his gaze drifting around the room with a practiced, almost weary, disinterest.
