Chapter 4
The Price of Order
Adrian begins implementing his plan to sanitize the empire. His efforts to bring order alienate those who thrive on chaos, creating new enemies.
The air in Adrian’s new office, formerly his uncle’s, still held the faint, cloying scent of stale cigar smoke and something metallic, like old blood. He ran a hand over the polished mahogany desk, the wood cool and unyielding beneath his touch. It was a new world, a vast, intricate machine he’d inherited, and his first task was to begin the delicate, dangerous work of dismantling it, piece by agonizing piece. The Bellandi empire, a sprawling beast of illicit enterprises and shadowy influence, was to be transformed. Not destroyed, not eradicated, but reshaped into something…cleaner. Something that could exist in the daylight, its roots buried deep in the soil of legitimate business.
His plan was meticulous, a carefully constructed edifice of shell corporations, charitable foundations, and private security firms. Construction companies would rise, their foundations laid with money laundered through offshore accounts. Charities would bloom, their benevolent facades masking the true beneficiaries. Private security firms, ostensibly protecting the city’s burgeoning businesses, would become the new enforcers, their loyalty bought not with fear, but with contracts and a shared interest in stability. It was elegant, in its own twisted way. Fear was inefficient, a blunt instrument that bred resentment. Control, true control, was about shaping the environment, about creating systems so deeply ingrained that they became invisible.
“The numbers for the Bridgeport development are in,” Marco, his uncle’s former consigliere, said, his voice a low rumble that still carried the weight of years spent in the shadows. Marco, a man whose face seemed perpetually etched with a grim understanding of the world, stood by the door, a folder clutched in his hand. He was part of the old guard, a relic of a bygone era, and Adrian knew he viewed Adrian’s plans with a skepticism that bordered on disdain.
