The ArchGovernor's Decree
Melissa's courageous song of protest reaches the ears of the ArchGovernor. In response to this open defiance, a death sentence is pronounced.
The echoing silence was the first thing that struck me. Not the quiet hum of the ventilation systems, nor the distant clang of pickaxes on vibranium ore, but a profound, deafening absence of sound. It was the silence that descended after a scream, after a song, after a life had been brutally extinguished. Melissa’s song, the Reaping Song, had been a defiant bloom in the arid soil of our lives, a melody woven from the pain and hope of generations. Now, it was a ghost, haunting the cavernous halls of Lykos.
Ugly Erik’s heavy hand had dragged us back from the whipping post, the raw welts on my back a dull ache compared to the searing agony in my gut. Melissa, her eyes still blazing with the fire of her defiance, had been shoved towards the central plaza, a place usually reserved for the meager distribution of rations or the pronouncements of Timothy Cu Podginus. Today, it was an execution ground.
The ArchGovernor. The name itself was a whisper of power, a distant, unseen deity who ruled from the gleaming spires of the surface cities. We, the deep-dwellers, the miners of Lykos, were but specks of dust to him, our existence a mere footnote in the grand design of terraforming Mars. Yet, it was his decree that would seal Melissa’s fate.
