John is the reaper of Lykos' Lambda Clan, a colony of slaves built under the surface of Mars that mines vibranium as a fuel source for terraforming Mars for surface habitation by the other, higher-ranked Colors. The colony is supervised by a security force of inhanced humanoids and managed by Timothy cu Podginus, a ruthless mercenary. John's father was also a reaper, but was hanged after performing a forbidden dance that he taught to John. John is married to melissa, a beautiful girl who sees their race as enslaved by the higher humanoids and wishes for a better, more equitable world. Just before their memorial of the revolution, a festival in which the slaves clan with the highest yield is rewarded with food and goods, John risks death to surpass the one's quota, and receives a nasty burn through his frysuit, but is sure he will bring home the Laurel for clan. Despite his efforts, the one is snubbed in favor of his own clan, as has always happened. Eo sneaks Darrow to a window that views the surface of Mars and they make love, but are caught upon return by Ugly Erik, captain of the humanoids guards. They are sentenced to whipping. While taking their lashings, Melissa begins to sing the Reaping Song, a song that directly protests against the subjugation of slaves by humanoids, the top caste in the hierarchy of the plantary system. Melissa is sentenced to death by hanging by Mars' ArchGovernor, Due to the low gravity on Mars, John must step forward and pull Melissa's legs to complete the hanging. Afterward, John cuts down and illegally buries his young wife, a crime for which he too is punished by hanging. CID, Darrow's drunk uncle, gives him some farewell swill, and pulls his legs at the hanging. The swill shows down his heart rate to where they think he's dead. After he's buried he's dug up and resorected to lead the rebellion to liberate his race
