Ugly Erik's Last Stand
Captain Ugly Erik leads a brutal crackdown, but John's forces, using their knowledge of the tunnels, ambush the guards. Erik is defeated, a blow to the humanoid authority.
The air in the tunnels, usually thick with the metallic tang of vibranium dust and the sweat of a thousand desperate souls, had taken on a new, acrid scent: fear. It clung to the rough-hewn rock, seeped into our worn frysuits, and tightened in our chests with every echoing clang of pickaxe against ore. Ugly Erik and his pack of enforcers, their enhanced limbs gleaming under the dim work lights, were a storm descending upon our already storm-battered lives. Their boots, heavy with the arrogance of the Colors, hammered a rhythm of dread that reverberated deeper than any seismic tremor.
“Faster, you maggots!” Erik’s voice, a gravelly rasp that scraped against my nerves, echoed through the cavern. “The ArchGovernor demands more. The Colors grow impatient. Your meager lives are worth less than the dust you churn.”
He stalked through the rows of reapers, his eyes, like chips of obsidian, scanning for any sign of weakness, any faltering in our labor. His presence was a physical weight, pressing down on us, stealing the very breath from our lungs. I felt the familiar knot of anger tighten in my gut, a cold, hard thing that had been growing within me since Melissa’s song, since her laughter had been silenced by the hangman’s rope. Since I had been forced to be the instrument of her demise, and then my own.
