As evening falls, Noam reflects on the wild thunderstorm. They talk about the noise, the hail, and how they stayed safe. The family enjoys Bubby's Shabbat dinner, appreciating the peace after the powerful storm.
The last of the daylight, a pale, watery gold, was seeping through the windows, painting the living room in muted tones. Outside, the wind had finally settled into a low, mournful sigh, a far cry from the ferocious roar it had unleashed just hours before. Noam sat cross-legged on the rug, chin propped in her hands, her gaze fixed on the now-gentle sway of the trees. The air inside the house felt thick with the scent of pasta and a quiet sort of exhaustion. Batya, her mom, hummed softly as she tidied up the kitchen, the clinking of dishes a comforting sound after the chaos. Bubby, Noam’s grandmother, sat in her favorite armchair, a half-finished crossword puzzle on her lap, her eyes closed, but her presence a steady anchor.
“It was really loud, wasn’t it, Mom?” Noam’s voice was soft, almost a whisper, as if the storm might still hear them if they spoke too loudly.
Batya paused, a dish towel in her hand. She walked over and sat on the floor beside Noam, pulling her close. “It was, sweetie. One of the loudest I’ve ever heard.”
