Sunbeams and Surprise

The dark clouds begin to break, letting golden sunbeams through. Noam and Batya step outside to see leaves scattered and puddles everywhere. Bubby, whose power is out, arrives with Shabbat food, relieved the worst is over.

The last rumblings of the storm had faded into a distant grumble, like a giant beast settling down for a nap. Noam, who had been peering through the slightly fogged living room window, let out a sigh that was almost as big as the storm itself had been. The sky, which had been a furious, bruised purple and charcoal just a little while ago, was now a soft, watery blue, with fluffy white clouds drifting lazily as if nothing had happened. Golden sunbeams, tentative at first, then bolder, began to slice through the remaining gray wisps, painting stripes of light across the lawn.

"It's… it's stopping," Noam breathed, her voice filled with a quiet awe. She had been glued to the window, a silent observer of the sky's dramatic performance. The rain, which had hammered against the glass with such ferocity, had dwindled to a gentle patter, and even that was fading fast.

Batya, who had been tidying up the kitchen, wiping down counters that still bore the faint scent of wet earth and ozone, came to stand beside her daughter. She put an arm around Noam's shoulders, her touch warm and reassuring. "It looks like it, sweetie. The worst is definitely over." She looked out at the yard, her brow furrowed slightly with concern, but a hopeful smile touched her lips. "Wow. Look at all those leaves."
