The Roar Softens
The loudest thunder fades, and the hail stops. The wind seems to sigh instead of scream. Noam peeks outside, noticing the rain isn't as heavy. Google tells them the storm is starting to move away.
The world outside had been a symphony of chaos, a booming, crashing, hissing, and howling concert that had rattled the very foundations of their home. But now, as Noam sat on the cool basement floor, the crescendo seemed to be fading. The thunder, which had been a violent drumbeat right overhead, was now a more distant rumble, like a giant clearing its throat. The frantic, stinging assault of hail had ceased, replaced by the steady, softer patter of rain. Even the wind, which had been a furious beast clawing at the windows, had lowered its voice to a mournful sigh that whispered through the eaves.
Noam, ever the curious one, felt a prickle of anticipation mixed with the lingering unease. He edged closer to the small, high basement window, the one that offered a sliver of the outside world. The glass was streaked with rain, blurring the landscape into a watery impressionist painting. He pressed his nose against the cool pane, his breath fogging a small circle. The trees, which had been thrashing wildly just moments before, now swayed with a gentler rhythm. The relentless downpour had eased, the sheets of water now more like a heavy curtain, still thick but no longer a blinding deluge.
He pulled out his phone, his fingers still a little shaky. "Google," he whispered, his voice a little hoarse from disuse. "Is it… is it over?"
