Chapter 6
Vanished Echoes
At the woods' edge, Harding finds definitive proof Lily was there. Yet, she's gone. The woods hold no answers, only deepening the enigma of her impossible disappearance, leaving her fate unknown.
The air in the woods hung heavy, a damp, verdant shroud that clung to Detective Harding’s skin like a second, unwelcome layer. The scent of decaying leaves and damp earth, usually a comforting aroma of nature’s cycle, now felt oppressive, laced with an unspoken dread. He pushed aside a thick curtain of ivy, its tendrils sticky and cool against his gloved hand, revealing a small, almost hidden clearing. It was a place the woods had tried to reclaim, a forgotten pocket where sunlight struggled to penetrate the dense canopy.
This was it. The place Lily’s journal had led him. The coded message, painstakingly deciphered over two sleepless nights, had pointed to this very spot, a place marked on no map, known to no one but the silent, ancient trees. Harding felt a prickle of anticipation, a familiar sensation that usually preceded a breakthrough, a tangible clue, a piece of the puzzle clicking into place. But here, in this hushed, verdant cathedral, the anticipation was tinged with a chilling uncertainty.
He surveyed the clearing. It was small, perhaps twenty feet across, a circular space where the undergrowth seemed a fraction less aggressive. In the center, almost swallowed by moss and fallen pine needles, was a large, flat stone. It wasn't natural, not entirely. Its edges were too smooth, too deliberately shaped. It looked like an altar, or perhaps a marker. He knelt, his knees protesting against the damp ground, and ran his fingers over its cool, rough surface. There were faint etchings, almost entirely worn away by time and weather. He squinted, trying to make out any recognizable pattern, any symbol that might connect to Lily’s cryptic research. Nothing.
