Detective Harding found himself in the hushed sanctuary of the Evans’ living room, the air thick with the scent of stale grief and Lemon Pledge. Mrs. Evans, a woman perpetually on the verge of tears, wrung her hands on the floral sofa, her eyes darting around the room as if expecting Lily to materialize from the chintz patterns. Mr. Evans, a man whose shoulders seemed permanently slumped under an invisible weight, sat beside her, his gaze fixed on the polished mahogany coffee table.

“She wasn’t unhappy, Detective,” Mr. Evans repeated, his voice raspy. “Not really. Just… quiet, lately. We thought it was just teenage stuff.”

Harding nodded, his pen hovering over his notepad. He’d heard variations of this sentiment from parents of missing children countless times. The ‘teenage stuff’ often masked deeper currents, unseen by those closest. “And this journal,” he prompted, gesturing to the worn leather-bound book resting on the table. “You said she kept it hidden?”
