The final bell of primary school was a sound that usually sent waves of giddy excitement through Elara. It was the herald of freedom, of long, sun-drenched days and spontaneous adventures. But this year, the familiar chime was laced with a strange, melancholic hum. It was the last day. The last day of this chapter, the last day of seeing Lois’s quiet smile across the classroom, the last day of their shared history etched into the very walls of St. Jude’s.

Elara’s heart felt like a tangled ball of yarn, a mixture of nostalgia and a growing unease that had settled over her like a persistent fog in recent weeks. Lois, her Lois, had become a stranger in familiar shoes. The easy laughter, the whispered secrets during break time, the comfortable silence they shared – it had all receded, replaced by a polite distance that pricked at Elara’s sensitive spirit. She’d tried, of course. She’d nudged Lois playfully, offered her the choicest piece of her biscuit, even attempted to drag her into their usual game of tag during recess, but Lois had deflected each advance with a gentle, almost apologetic, wave of her hand. It was like trying to hold onto mist; the harder Elara grasped, the more it slipped through her fingers.

Today, the air in the classroom crackled with the energy of impending separation. Children were busy exchanging hastily scribbled notes, trading friendship bracelets, and packing away their school year memories into overflowing backpacks. Elara watched Lois, her gaze lingering on the way the sunlight caught the auburn highlights in her friend’s hair. Lois was meticulously organizing her desk, her movements precise and almost unnaturally calm. There was a quiet intensity about her, a stillness that Elara had never noticed before. It was a stillness that felt less like peace and more like a carefully constructed dam holding back a flood.
