New Beginnings

The school gates, usually a bustling hive of excited shouts and hurried goodbyes, felt strangely muted. Elara stood a little apart from the throng, her gaze fixed on the figure of Lois, who was saying goodbye to Maya. It wasn't the hurried, perfunctory wave Elara had grown accustomed to in recent weeks; it was a lingering embrace, a soft murmur of words that Elara couldn't quite decipher from this distance. A familiar ache tightened in her chest, a dull throb that had become a constant companion since the day Lois had turned away from her, offering that same unexpected warmth to Maya.

The air, thick with the scent of drying grass and the faint, sweet perfume of late-blooming honeysuckle, seemed to hold its breath. Elara watched as Lois finally pulled away from Maya, her expression unreadable. Then, Lois turned, her eyes sweeping across the crowd until they landed on Elara. Lois offered a small, polite nod in Elara’s direction, a gesture that felt as cold and distant as a winter frost. It was the kind of nod one gave a stranger, or perhaps a distant acquaintance, certainly not the best friend who had shared scraped knees, whispered secrets, and dreams under starry skies. Elara’s throat felt tight, a knot of unshed tears and unspoken questions. She wanted to run to Lois, to demand an explanation, to ask why she felt so utterly invisible.
