Chapter 4
Igniting the Geothermal Heart
A crucial breakthrough in the Sterling engine's design unlocks its true potential. The geothermal heat is harnessed efficiently, providing the power needed for the carbon capture and refinement process.
The air in the testing bay hummed with a nervous energy, a palpable tension that seemed to cling to the very rivets of the Sterling engine. It was a symphony of clicks, whirs, and the occasional frustrated sigh, a soundscape that had become the backdrop to Lena Petrova’s life for the past few months. She ran a calloused thumb over a coolant pipe, her brow furrowed in concentration. Beside her, Aris Thorne paced the concrete floor, his usual wild-eyed enthusiasm tempered by a gnawing anxiety. His fingers, perpetually stained with graphite and oil, gestured animatedly as he spoke, his voice a low, urgent murmur.
“It’s the thermal gradient, Lena, I’m telling you! We’re losing efficiency in the delta. The heat isn’t transferring cleanly enough across the working fluid. It’s like trying to pour water through a sieve.”
Lena nodded, her gaze fixed on a cluster of pressure gauges. “I see the readings, Aris. The temperature differential is there, but the output… it’s not what the simulations predicted. Not even close.” She tapped a gauge with a knuckle. “This little beauty is fighting us every step of the way.”
