Elias, Anya, Lena, Lyra, and the bartender enter the space between dimensions, an endless gray expanse where the ancient being sleeps. They follow the child Maker's guidance to find the first promise, a broken oath that echoes through the void. The being stirs, attacking with memories of loneliness. The group uses their bond to shield each other, and Elias reaches the promise—a glowing thread that must be retied. But the being fully awakens, revealing itself as the First Teacher, and seizes the child, demanding a sacrifice to restore the promise.
The darkness didn't swallow them. It opened into something worse: a vast gray nothing that stretched in every direction without horizon or depth. There was no up or down, no sound except the thud of their own hearts, no light except the faint glow coming from the child Maker's skin.
Elias held her tighter. She felt smaller here, more fragile, as if the void was pressing in from all sides. Anya's hand found his shoulder. Lena's shield flickered at the edge of his vision, a warm amber against the gray. Lyra walked close to the bartender, her small fingers laced with the older woman's.
"It's quiet," Lyra whispered. "Too quiet."
