Chapter 44
Chapter 44: The Child's Fear
Elias, Anya, Lena, Lyra, and the bartender confront the Maker as a child whose fear creates a widening crack. Lyra touches the child, revealing that the darkness is the void's remnants using the child's loneliness. The group must help the child remember love instead of fear. As they sing the lullaby together, the crack slows but does not seal. The child reveals that the only way to close it is to give her something she lost: the first gatekeeper's promise. The chapter ends with the crack beginning to spread again, and the child fading.
The crack behind the child widened, a thin line of darkness that pulsed like a heartbeat. The child kept singing, her voice trembling, but the lullaby wavered, notes falling like shattered glass.
Elias stayed on his knees, his hand reaching out but not touching her. “We’re here now. You don’t have to be afraid alone.”
The child looked up, her eyes too old for her face. “But I am alone. I’ve always been alone. That’s why I made the void—to keep me company.”
