The air in the orchard, once heavy with the scent of neglect, now carried the subtle perfume of damp earth and the promise of new life. Elara found herself drawn to it, not just by obligation, but by a burgeoning curiosity that surprised her. She’d spent so many years coaxing life from flour and yeast, her world confined to the warm, predictable embrace of her bakery. This wilder, untamed space, however, was beginning to whisper its own secrets to her, and she, hesitantly at first, was learning to listen.

Liam, as always, was already there when she arrived. He moved with a quiet efficiency amidst the trees, his hands, calloused and stained with soil, tending to the delicate work of pruning. He didn’t offer grand pronouncements, but rather a series of patient gestures, a gentle guidance that spoke volumes. Today, he was showing her how to identify the subtle signs of disease on the apple leaves.

“See this mottling?” he’d said, his voice a low rumble that blended with the rustling leaves. He pointed to a discolored patch on a broad, green surface. “It’s a sign of blight. You need to remove these branches before it spreads. Not with a yank, but a clean cut, just above the healthy wood.”
