Chapter 6
A Seed of Doubt
Elara revisits the orchard, still hurt. Liam explains his actions and his realization that true value lies in cultivation, not acquisition, hoping to rebuild her trust.
The air in Elara’s bakery, “Crumb and Honey,” felt thick with unspoken words, just like the dough she kneaded with a little too much force. Three days had passed since Don Rogelio’s pronouncement, three days of stewing in a bitter broth of betrayal. The sweet scent of baking bread, usually a balm to her soul, now seemed to mock her with its comforting familiarity. It was Liam, the boy with earth perpetually under his fingernails, who had shattered that comfort. He, who had spoken of nurturing the land, of listening to the silent language of the soil, had been planning to snatch it all away.
She’d fled the orchard that day, the vibrant promise of a new beginning curdled into a sour fear. She’d retreated to the familiar, to the warm embrace of her ovens, but even there, the ghost of his confession lingered. His words, “My family wanted to buy these lands a year ago. I didn’t know it was you the heir. When I found out, I didn’t know how to tell you,” echoed in the quiet moments between loaves rising and cookies cooling. It wasn’t just that he’d intended to buy it; it was the silence, the deception, however unintentional. It felt like another hand reaching out, only to pull the rug out from under her.
The basket of strawberries, plump and impossibly red, had appeared on her doorstep this morning, a silent plea accompanied by a note. “I don’t want the orchard if you’re not in it. I broke the purchase contract. The orchard is yours. But if you leave me, I want to keep cultivating it with you. – L.” The “L” was a small, brave spark in the darkness. She’d read it a dozen times, tracing the edges of the paper as if it held some secret magic. The strawberries themselves, so perfect, so representative of the very land she’d accused him of coveting, were a silent testament to his care.
