Chapter 10
THE NEW BALANCE
They emerged from the forest as the sun was setting, painting the sky in shades of gold and purple that reflected off the slopes of Xindewula Mountain. The village of Hlaneki was waiting for them at the edge – Rixile’s grandmother, Mrs Shongotelo, and the entire population had gathered there, watching and waiting with bated breath.
When they saw only two young men emerge from the trees, a wave of sadness swept through the crowd. Mrs Shongotelo fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face, as she understood what had happened. Rixile’s grandmother wrapped her arms around the healer, holding her close as they grieved together for the boy they had both loved as a son.
Rixile and Sungu walked slowly toward the waiting villagers, their heads bowed in respect for their lost friend. As they reached the edge of the crowd, Rixile held up his hands to quiet the murmurs that had begun to spread.
