Chapter 3
Chapter 3: The Guardians Arrive
KJ follows the white-cloaked figure through the city, but before they reach safety, the figure vanishes and the Guardians attack, forcing KJ into a desperate fight.
KJ followed the white-cloaked figure through the winding streets, his body still humming with golden light. The cobblestones felt different under his feet now—every crack, every pebble, every shadow seemed sharper, more real. He could hear his own heartbeat, steady and strong, and beneath it, the faint pulse of the shard inside him.
The white-cloaked figure moved quickly, turning down alleys and crossing empty plazas. KJ kept up, his legs stretching to match their pace. The city was quiet, the street lamps casting pools of warm light on the stone.
"Where are we going?" KJ asked.
"Somewhere safe," the figure replied without slowing. "An old sanctuary. The Order doesn't know about it."
They rounded a corner and entered a narrow passage between two tall buildings. The walls pressed close, and the air grew cool. KJ's shard pulsed once, a warning he didn't understand.
Then the white-cloaked figure stopped.
"What's wrong?" KJ asked.
The figure turned, their silver eyes wide. "They're here."
"Who?"
Before the figure could answer, a bright blue light exploded in front of them. KJ threw up his arm, shielding his eyes. When the light faded, the white-cloaked figure was gone.
"Hey!" KJ shouted, spinning around. The passage was empty. "Where did you—"
A voice cut through the darkness. "The traitor has fled."
KJ's blood went cold. He turned slowly.
Three figures stood at the entrance of the passage, their cloaks shimmering with different colors—one blue, one green, one red. They were tall and still, like statues. Each held a weapon: the blue one a sword, the green one a spear, the red one a pair of curved daggers.
"Who are you?" KJ asked, though he already knew.
The blue-cloaked figure stepped forward. "I am Guardian Vex. This is Guardian Thorn and Guardian Ash." She gestured to the green and red figures. "We are the Order's elite. And you, stick figure, carry a shard that does not belong to you."
KJ's hands clenched. "The shard chose me."
"The shard does not choose," Guardian Thorn said, his voice low and cold. "It is granted by the Order."
"Well, it chose me anyway." KJ straightened, letting the golden light glow brighter. "So what now?"
Guardian Vex raised her sword. Blue energy crackled along its blade. "You surrender the shard, or we take it."
"And if I don't?"
"Then you die."
KJ didn't wait for her to finish. He lunged forward, his arm stretching into a fist that slammed into Guardian Vex's chest. She staggered back, but Guardian Thorn was already moving, his spear slicing through the air where KJ had been a moment before.
KJ twisted, flattening himself to avoid the blow. The spear passed inches above him. He kicked out, his leg stretching to catch Thorn in the knee. The guardian grunted but didn't fall.
Then Guardian Ash was there, daggers flashing. KJ threw up his arm, turning it into a golden shield. The daggers clanged against it, sparks flying. He pushed forward, shoving Ash back, but Vex was already swinging her sword.
KJ jumped, his legs carrying him high into the air. He landed on the wall, sticking to it like a spider, and launched himself at Vex from above. She met him midair, sword and fist colliding. Golden and blue light exploded, throwing them both apart.
KJ hit the ground hard, rolling to his feet. The three guardians surrounded him, their weapons glowing.
"You fight well for a novice," Guardian Ash said, twirling her daggers. "But you don't understand the power you hold."
"Then teach me," KJ said, and he attacked again.
The fight spilled out of the passage and into the street. KJ moved like he never had before, his body stretching and twisting in ways that should have been impossible. He blocked Vex's sword with his forearm, dodged Thorn's spear by bending backward, and caught Ash's daggers between his fingers.
But the guardians were relentless. They attacked in perfect coordination, covering each other's weaknesses. Every time KJ dodged one blow, another was already coming. His golden light flickered. He was getting tired.
"You cannot win," Vex said, her voice calm. "Surrender, and we will grant you a quick death."
"No," KJ growled.
He reached deep inside himself, feeling the shard pulse. Golden energy surged through him, hot and bright. His body expanded, growing taller, his limbs thickening. He let out a roar that shook the windows.
The guardians paused.
KJ swung his arm, now as thick as a tree trunk, and caught all three of them in one blow. They flew backward, crashing into a cart. Wood splintered, and the guardians lay among the wreckage, groaning.
KJ panted, his body shrinking back to normal. The golden light dimmed. He felt drained, barely able to stand.
But the guardians were already rising.
"Impressive," Vex said, wiping blood from her lip. "But not enough."
She raised her sword, and the blue light around it grew blinding. The other two guardians did the same, their weapons glowing with green and red energy. The three lights merged, forming a single beam that shot toward KJ.
KJ tried to dodge, but he was too slow. The beam hit him square in the chest, and the world went white.
He felt himself flying backward, tumbling over the cobblestones. His body ached. The shard inside him flickered, barely glowing.
"Finish him," Vex ordered.
Guardian Thorn stepped forward, spear raised.
But before he could strike, a golden light flared between them. The white-cloaked figure appeared, staff spinning, and deflected the spear with a crack of energy.
"Enough," the figure said.
Vex's eyes narrowed. "Traitor."
"I'm no traitor. I'm the one who sees the truth." The white-cloaked figure stood over KJ, staff ready. "And this one is under my protection."
"You cannot protect him forever."
"I don't need forever. I just need long enough."
The white-cloaked figure slammed the staff into the ground. Golden light erupted, forming a dome around them. The guardians backed away, shielding their eyes.
When the light faded, the street was empty.
KJ and the white-cloaked figure were gone.
