Chapter 2
Chapter 2: The White-Cloaked Figure
KJ meets the white-cloaked figure, who offers him a choice. When KJ hesitates, a fight breaks out, and the white figure eventually offers KJ the ultimate power beyond existence. KJ accepts.
KJ stared at the white-cloaked figure. The golden staff glowed, casting long shadows across the cobblestones. The street lamps flickered, and KJ's hands tingled with that warm, buzzing sensation.
"A choice?" KJ said, taking a cautious step back. "What kind of choice?"
The figure stepped closer, their boots making soft clicks on the stone. "The shard chose you. That's rare. The Order doesn't like rare. They'll hunt you until they rip it out of you—and that would probably kill you."
KJ's stomach dropped. "Kill me?"
"The shard is bonded to your essence now. Remove it, and you unravel." The white-cloaked figure stopped a few feet away. "But there's another path. You can keep the shard and learn to use it. I can teach you."
"Why would you help me?" KJ asked, his voice sharper than he intended.
"Because I don't agree with the Order. They hoard power. They decide who's worthy. But the shard chose you, and that means something." The figure lowered their hood, revealing a calm face with silver eyes. "I'm offering you a chance to become something more than a stick figure who breaks glass cases."
KJ winced. "You saw that?"
"I saw enough." The figure smiled, but it didn't reach their eyes. "So, what do you say? Accept my help, or take your chances with the blue one and her sword."
KJ thought about it. Running seemed like a good idea. He could hide, figure things out on his own. But the blue-cloaked figure had been fast, and this white one had found him too easily. He didn't like his odds.
"Okay," KJ said slowly. "I'll take your help."
The white-cloaked figure nodded. "Good. But first, a test."
Before KJ could ask what kind of test, the golden staff swung toward his head. KJ yelped and ducked, his legs stretching automatically to carry him backward. The staff whistled past, missing by inches.
"Hey!" KJ shouted, scrambling to his feet. "What was that for?"
"To see if you're worth teaching." The figure spun the staff, golden light trailing behind it. "Show me what the shard gave you."
KJ didn't have time to argue. The staff came at him again, and he threw up his arm. It stretched into a thin shield, catching the blow. The impact sent a jolt through him, but he held.
"Good," the figure said. "Now attack."
KJ hesitated. He didn't want to fight. But the staff was already swinging again, faster this time. KJ dodged, his body bending in ways that shouldn't have been possible. He stretched his leg, kicking out at the figure's chest. The white-cloaked figure blocked with the staff, but the force pushed them back a step.
"Better," they said, a hint of approval in their voice.
They came at each other again and again. KJ's movements grew more fluid, his stretches more precise. He found he could twist his torso to avoid strikes, lengthen his arms to grab ledges, even flatten himself to slip through narrow gaps. The white-cloaked figure matched him, their staff a blur of gold.
Minutes passed. The fight moved down the street, past shuttered shops and dark windows. KJ's breath came in gasps, but he felt alive. The shard hummed inside him, responding to his every thought.
Finally, the white-cloaked figure stepped back, lowering their staff. "Enough."
KJ stopped, his chest heaving. "Is that it? Did I pass?"
The figure studied him with those silver eyes. "You have potential. But potential isn't enough. The Order will send more than the blue one. They'll send hunters, scholars, even the Guardians if they have to."
"Guardians?" KJ asked.
"The Order's elite. They wield shards of their own." The figure's voice grew serious. "You can't defeat them with stretches and dodges. You need more."
KJ swallowed. "What do you mean?"
The white-cloaked figure raised their staff. The golden light flared, casting the street in harsh brightness. "The shard inside you is a fragment of something greater. The Celestial Shard is one of seven. Together, they form the Heart of Existence—the source of all cosmic power."
KJ's eyes widened. "All cosmic power?"
"Yes." The figure's gaze was intense. "I can give you the power to command that source. The ultimate power beyond existence itself. You would become more than a guardian. You would become a force of nature."
KJ's hands trembled. "And what would I have to do?"
"Accept it. Open yourself to the shard completely. Let it reshape you." The figure extended a hand. "Take my hand, KJ, and I will show you what you can become."
KJ looked at the outstretched hand. He thought about the blue-cloaked figure, the Order, the hunters and Guardians that would come. He thought about the broken glass, the lifetime ban, the way everyone in town saw him as a troublemaker.
He didn't want to run anymore.
KJ reached out and took the white-cloaked figure's hand.
The world exploded into light.
Golden energy surged through KJ's body, hot and bright. He felt the shard inside him expand, filling every corner of his being. His vision went white. For a moment, he was everywhere and nowhere, floating in an endless sea of power.
Then it settled.
KJ opened his eyes. The street was the same, but he saw it differently now—every grain of stone, every flicker of lamplight, every shadow. His body hummed with energy. He looked at his hands. They glowed with a soft golden light, layered over the red.
"How do you feel?" the white-cloaked figure asked.
KJ flexed his fingers. They stretched farther than before, and the golden light followed, creating trails in the air. "Different," he said. "Powerful."
The figure smiled. "Good. Because the Order will feel that. They'll know a new force has awakened." They turned, looking toward the clock tower. "And they'll come for you."
KJ stood taller. "Let them come."
The white-cloaked figure nodded. "That's the spirit. But first, we need to move. There's a safe place I know, where we can train."
KJ followed, his new power thrumming beneath his skin. He didn't know what lay ahead, but for the first time, he felt ready for it.
