Chapter 14
Silas's Confrontation
Silas catches up, leading to a tense confrontation within the city. He reveals more of his desperate ambition, willing to destroy anything to get what he wants.
The air in the lost city was thick with an ancient silence, a hush that seemed to absorb sound and thought alike. Alex, heart pounding a frantic rhythm against their ribs, navigated the labyrinthine alleys, the compass a warm weight in their hand. The glow from the artifact, a soft, pulsing emerald, cast an ethereal light on the moss-covered stones. They had outmaneuvered Silas, or so they thought, their pursuer a phantom presence that had haunted their every step since the attic. But the city, with its silent sentinels and shadowed archways, offered a disquieting sense of being watched, not by the dead, but by something far more vigilant.
A sudden shift in the air, a disturbance in the quietude, sent a jolt of adrenaline through Alex. It was the unmistakable sound of hurried footsteps, too heavy for the spectral guardians, too deliberate for the city’s own echoes. Silas. He had found them.
Alex ducked behind a crumbling pillar, pressing themselves against the cool, damp stone. The compass in their hand pulsed, a frantic beat mirroring their own racing heart. Through a gap in the stonework, they saw him. Silas, his face a mask of grim determination, moved with a predatory grace, his eyes scanning the surroundings, his scarred map clutched in one hand. The parchment, Alex noticed with a prickle of unease, seemed to possess a faint luminescence of its own, a sickly yellow glow that contrasted sharply with the compass’s vibrant green.
