The air within the lost city hung thick and still, a breath held for millennia. Alex, heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against their ribs, stepped further into the cavernous chamber, the compass a cool weight in their palm. The stone beneath their boots, worn smooth by ages of forgotten feet, seemed to absorb the sound, leaving an oppressive silence in its wake. They had breached the outer defenses, navigated the labyrinthine passages, and now stood at the precipice of the city’s core. The compass needle, usually so decisive, quivered, not pointing towards a single destination but spinning in a slow, hesitant dance.

"Hello?" Alex’s voice, a mere whisper, bounced back, distorted and hollow. No answer. Only the drip, drip, drip of unseen water somewhere in the vast darkness. Yet, there was an unnerving stillness, a sense of abandonment that sent a shiver down their spine. Where were the inhabitants? Where was the artifact?

A low hum began to emanate from the compass, a vibration that resonated deep within Alex’s bones. The needle stilled, pointing now towards a colossal archway at the far end of the chamber, shrouded in an even deeper shadow. As Alex approached, the carvings on the archway seemed to shift, depicting figures in flowing robes, their faces serene, their hands raised in a gesture of welcome or perhaps, of warning.
