The usual cheerful chime of the ‘Dubajus’ app felt a little hollow now, like a bell rung underwater. Jonas sat at his small kitchen table, the chipped Formica cool beneath his forearms, staring at the numbers that glowed on his phone screen. The digits were undeniably impressive, a cascade of zeros that had once seemed like a dream. But lately, they felt more like a burden. Every time he saw them, a knot tightened in his stomach, a subtle, nagging feeling that something wasn’t quite right.

But the promise of even more money, the subtle pressure from the app’s cheerful, insistent notifications, had won out. He’d sent the money. And then the earnings had jumped, a sudden, inexplicable surge that had silenced his doubts, at least for a while.
