Chapter 5

Shadows in the Code

Jonas digs deeper, his initial joy replaced by suspicion. He sees patterns that don't add up, hints of a hidden game. Is this wealth real, or a dangerous illusion?

Jonas traced the glowing lines of the 'Dubajus' app on his phone screen, the familiar shimmer of its interface now feeling less like a promise and more like a riddle. The initial thrill, the dizzying rush of seeing his balance climb, had begun to fade, replaced by a prickling unease. It was like watching a magician perform, the sleight of hand so quick and convincing that you almost didn't question it, until a stray feather fluttered from the magician's sleeve. Jonas felt like he’d just seen that feather.

He’d started with small, almost trivial amounts, enough to buy a decent meal or send a little extra to his mother. But the app, with its slick animations and encouraging nudges, had always pushed for more. ‘Invest a little more for a bigger return!’ it had chirped, its digital voice a siren song. And Jonas, caught in the current of easy money, had listened. He’d invested more, and the returns had indeed come, larger and faster than before. Now, his account balance was a number he’d only dreamed of, a number that felt both exhilarating and terrifyingly unreal.

He remembered the day he'd first noticed something odd. He'd been trying to transfer a larger sum to his family, a celebratory amount he’d earned through the app. The transfer had gone through, but when he’d checked his bank statement, the transaction wasn’t listed as a withdrawal from ‘Dubajus’. Instead, it was a strange, anonymized deposit from a source he didn't recognize, followed by an immediate, equally anonymous withdrawal. It was like the money had materialized out of thin air, danced its way into his account, and then vanished just as mysteriously, leaving only the final amount for his family.
