Chapter 8: The Locket's Burden
Mallory and Desmond re-enter Blackwood Manor, now with the Shadow Man bound in the locket. They discover a hidden basement door and find the trapped girls, but the locket begins to crack under the strain of containing the Shadow Man. Mallory learns that freeing the girls will release the Shadow Man, raising the stakes as she must make a difficult choice.
The manor loomed before them, its windows dark and hollow like empty eye sockets. Mallory clutched the locket in her hand, feeling its warmth pulse against her palm. The silver surface seemed to breathe, a faint rhythm that matched the heartbeat of the trapped Shadow Man within. She could still hear his whispered promise: "The darkness never truly dies. It only waits."
Desmond walked beside her, his hand pressed to his forehead where the wound had finally stopped bleeding. His face was pale in the moonlight, but his eyes held a steady resolve. "Are you sure about this?" he asked, his voice low. "We just barely escaped."
"We have to," Mallory replied, her voice firm. "Serena and the others are still in there. We can't leave them."
