Chapter 6: The Room of Echoes
Mallory and Desmond are pulled into the void by the Shadow Man, where they find themselves in a dark, endless space filled with echoes of the past. Mallory uses the locket to uncover the Shadow Man's secret: he was once a man named Thomas Blackwood, who lost his wife Eleanor in a fire and has been trapping souls in grief ever since. The chapter ends with Mallory confronting Thomas's deepest pain, causing the void to tremble, but the Shadow Man retaliates by dragging them deeper toward a final, ominous door.
The darkness was absolute. Mallory felt herself falling, tumbling through an endless nothing that pressed against her from all sides, cold and heavy as stone. She reached out blindly, her fingers finding nothing but air. The sound of her own heartbeat thundered in her ears, drowning out everything else.
Then, with a jolt, she landed. The impact knocked the breath from her lungs, and she lay there for a moment, gasping, her eyes struggling to adjust to the faint, gray light that seemed to emanate from nowhere. She was on a cold, stone floor, the surface rough and uneven beneath her palms.
"Desmond!" she called, her voice echoing in the vast emptiness. "Desmond, where are you?"
