Later, after the guests had departed, leaving behind the lingering scent of expensive perfume and secrets, I found myself unable to sleep. The vastness of the master suite felt cavernous, and the silence amplified the questions swirling in my mind. Mateo had retreated to his study, the usual soft glow of his desk lamp a beacon in the darkened wing of the house.
