The heavy oak door swung inward with a soft groan, revealing a study that was less a room and more a testament to power. Dark mahogany lined the walls, a library of leather-bound volumes whispering of untold histories. The air was thick with the scent of aged paper, expensive cigar smoke, and something else… something metallic, like secrets rusting in the dark. I stood on the threshold, my heart a hummingbird trapped against my ribs, waiting.

Mateo was already there, a silhouette against the late afternoon sun filtering through the tall, leaded windows. He didn't turn immediately, his gaze fixed on something beyond my comprehension, something etched into the polished surface of his massive desk. When he finally did, his eyes, those unnervingly perceptive depths, swept over me, a silent, unnerving appraisal. He wore a charcoal suit, impeccably tailored, the kind that spoke of fortunes made and decisions carved in stone.

“Isabella,” he said, his voice a low rumble, devoid of warmth but not of authority. It was the sound of a king addressing a subject, a predator acknowledging its prey. “You’ve arrived.”
