The Man of God’s voice, a rasp of dried leaves and forgotten whispers, slithered into my mind, wrapping around my deepest fears like icy vines. “You are but a boy,” it hissed, the words echoing in the silent, frozen world. “Alone. Weak. They will forget you. Just as you will forget them. What is love, but a fleeting shadow when despair is eternal?”

My knees buckled. The weight of his words, so perfectly crafted to find the cracks in my resolve, pressed down on me. He was right, wasn’t he? I was just Leo. A boy who sometimes tripped over his own feet, who got scared of the dark, who couldn’t even solve a tricky math problem without help. How could I possibly be the one to save a world? The shimmering light, Opeyemi, pulsed gently beside me, a soft, steady glow, but even its warmth felt distant now, a pale imitation of the blazing certainty I needed.

The Man of God chuckled, a sound like pebbles grinding together. “Look at them,” he beckoned with a shadowy tendril, and my gaze was drawn to the frozen tableau of the world. My mother, mid-laughter, her eyes crinkling at the corners, a teacup halfway to her lips. My father, caught in the act of tying my shoelaces, a patient smile on his face. My best friend, Maya, her mouth open in a shout of excitement as she pointed at something, her vibrant energy stilled. They were all there, perfect and motionless, like a painting that could never be finished.
