The mountain air, once a balm, began to prickle with an unfamiliar tension. It was a subtle shift, like the faintest tremor beneath the granite, or the distant whisper of wind through a newly opened crevice. I’d grown accustomed to the profound quiet of the Grand Hotel, to the way the silence wrapped around me like a velvet shroud, muffling the sharp edges of memory. But now, a thread of unease, thin as spider silk, began to weave itself into the tapestry of my solitude.

The shadows, once my allies, now seemed to deepen with a watchful quality, as if holding their breath.
