The First Step
Under Pip's gentle guidance, Mysterio takes a tentative step onto the dance floor. The music envelops him, and for a moment, the weight of his past begins to lift, replaced by a nascent joy.
The air in the Grand Hotel had a way of holding its breath, a silent testament to a time when laughter and music had echoed through its halls. Each dust mote dancing in the slivers of sunlight that pierced the grand, arched windows seemed to carry a whisper of those forgotten days. I had found a peculiar solace in this stillness, a quietude that soothed the ragged edges of my spirit. The ornate patterns of the wallpaper, faded yet still proud, the velvet of the armchairs, worn smooth by countless hands, the very silence itself, all began to weave themselves into the fabric of my being. It was a sanctuary, a place where the world outside, with its sharp edges and demanding voices, could not reach me.
Then, Pip arrived. A flicker of emerald light, a giggle like wind chimes, and suddenly the hotel's hushed grandeur was no longer just my own. Pip, with eyes like dew-kissed moss and wings that shimmered with the iridescence of a dragonfly, was a creature of pure, unadulterated mischief. They flitted through the ballroom, tracing patterns in the air, their energy a stark contrast to the hotel’s languid grace.
“You’re so… still,” Pip had chirped, landing on the edge of a dusty grand piano, their tiny feet barely disturbing the layer of forgotten notes. “Like a statue carved from moonlight.”
