Chapter 9
Dad's Homecoming
The day Leo's dad returns is full of hugs and excitement. The family is reunited, and Leo feels a wave of happiness wash over him, his dad's strong arms around him.
The yellow school bus rumbled to a stop, its brakes sighing like a weary old giant. Leo, his backpack bouncing against his legs, scanned the familiar street, his heart thrumming a nervous, excited rhythm. Sam, ever the optimist, was already halfway down the block, his bright red sneakers a blur as he raced towards Leo’s house. Buster, a furry cannonball of pure joy, erupted from the front yard, a whirlwind of happy barks and wagging tail.
“He’s here! He’s really here!” Sam shouted, his voice cracking with excitement.
Leo could barely believe it. After what felt like an eternity of empty evenings and quiet dinners, Dad was coming home. The house had felt so big and echoey without him, filled with the faint scent of his cologne on a pillow and the ghost of his booming laugh. Mom had tried to fill the silence, her smiles a little too bright, her reassurances a little too quick. She’d spent more and more time with Mrs. Gable, their hushed conversations on the porch a constant reminder of Dad’s absence. Leo had liked Mrs. Gable, truly he had. She told the funniest jokes, her eyes crinkling at the corners when she laughed, and she always had a treat for Buster. But still, a little knot of unease had tightened in Leo’s stomach whenever he saw his mom’s face light up talking to her. It felt like his mom was making a new best friend, and Leo, who was still missing his dad, felt a pang of… well, he wasn’t quite sure what. Jealousy? Loneliness? A bit of both, probably.
