Quietville's Newest Detective (and a Very Large Pie)

With the mystery solved and the giant pumpkin returned (mostly), Ms. Periwinkle is hailed as a local hero, proving that even the quietest librarian can be a brilliant detective. The town celebrates with a giant pumpkin pie, and Ms. Periwinkle learns that sometimes, a little bit of mess can lead to a lot of fun.

The air in the library, usually thick with the scent of old paper and hushed reverence, now hummed with a different kind of energy. Sunlight, usually content to merely illuminate the dust motes dancing in its beams, seemed to sparkle with a newfound cheerfulness. Ms. Periwinkle stood by the circulation desk, a small, triumphant smile playing on her lips. The giant pumpkin, or what was left of it after the children’s spirited decorating endeavors, now occupied a place of honor right inside the library’s main entrance. It wasn't quite as majestic as it had been, a few of its original orange segments having been replaced by brightly painted cardboard cutouts, but it still commanded attention. Strings of glitter glue crisscrossed its surface, and two googly eyes, taped precariously close to its stem, stared out with an endearing, if slightly lopsided, charm.

Barnaby Button, his cheeks still flushed from the earlier confession, hovered nearby, polishing a small, framed photograph of the newly decorated pumpkin with a meticulousness that rivaled Ms. Periwinkle's own. He’d taken to helping out at the library, an unofficial penance, perhaps, but one he seemed to genuinely enjoy. The library, once a place of quiet trepidation for him, now felt like a second home.

"Barnaby," Ms. Periwinkle said, her voice soft but clear, "are you quite sure that pumpkin needs another polish? I believe it’s sparkling quite sufficiently."
