The sun, a mischievous eye in the autumn sky, played hide-and-seek with fluffy clouds as Ms. Periwinkle’s sensible shoes crunched softly on the gravel path leading to Whispering Willows Park. The park wasn't exactly a wilderness, but it was the wilder side of Quietville, a place where the manicured lawns gave way to untamed patches of tall grass and ancient trees with roots that snaked above ground like sleeping pythons. A shiver, not entirely from the crisp air, traced its way up her spine. This felt less like library duty and more like, well, an adventure. And adventures, as she understood them from books, often involved unexpected twists and a distinct lack of proper cataloging.

Her first clue, scrawled in crayon on the back of the confession note, had been a hastily drawn map. The air here was cooler, tinged with the damp scent of earth and decaying leaves. A faint, high-pitched giggle drifted from beyond the green veil.

Ms. Periwinkle hesitated. Propriety dictated she announce herself, but detective work, according to her extensive reading, often required a touch of stealth. Taking a deep breath that smelled faintly of pine and childhood secrets, she pushed aside a heavy curtain of willow branches.
