The shrill, insistent shriek of the security alarm ripped Eleanor from a fitful sleep. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trapped in a cage. Disoriented, she fumbled for the bedside lamp, its sudden glow harsh against her sleep-blurred vision. 3:17 AM. Her first thought was an irrational fear of fire, then, a more chilling realization: the library. Only the library had an alarm system that piercing, that demanding of immediate attention.

She scrambled out of bed, her bare feet meeting the cold wooden floor. A rush of adrenaline cleared the last vestiges of sleep. Tossing on a worn dressing gown over her pajamas, she grabbed her keys and phone. The thought of her sanctuary, her quiet, ordered world, being violated sent a cold dread through her. Who would break into a library? What could they possibly want? Books, perhaps, but the alarm suggested something more violent, more disruptive.

The drive to the library was a blur of streetlights and anxious thoughts. The Oakhaven Police Department’s cruiser was already idling in front, its blue and red lights painting the familiar brick facade in an eerie, pulsing glow. Officer Miller, a man whose patience was as thin as his mustache, stood by the main entrance, a flashlight beam cutting through the darkness.
