Lily traced the spidery script in Elara’s journal, her heart thumping a little faster with each turn of the brittle page. The entries had painted a vivid picture of her great-great-aunt’s daring escapades, a whirlwind of exotic locales and daring escapes. But lately, the tone had shifted. A new name kept appearing, like a dark cloud on an otherwise bright horizon: Silas Croft.
“Silas,” Lily murmured, the name feeling foreign on her tongue, yet strangely familiar from the hushed whispers of family lore. She reread the passage, Elara’s elegant handwriting now tinged with a frustrated sharpness.
*“Croft’s shadow lengthens with every step I take,”* Elara had written, the ink a little bolder, almost angry. *“He dogmatically pursues the same discoveries, his methods crude and his ambition a gaping maw. He sees only the glory, the headlines. He does not understand the whisper of the wind, the song of the earth. He is a bull in a china shop, and I fear he will shatter something precious.”*
