Aunt Elara’s journal, with its spidery script and smudged illustrations, was unfolding a story far grander than Lily had ever imagined.

The entry that had made her breath catch was tucked near the back, a hasty addition, as if Elara had scribbled it in a rush before hurrying off to an important meeting. “The Falcon’s Perch,” it read, followed by a series of symbols Lily didn’t recognize. Below them, a short, rhyming couplet:
