Chapter 3
Chapter 3: The Stranger by the Well
Layia practices her warrior bow with Ed in the village square. A mysterious stranger named Mystica approaches, quietly observing the group. When Ed greets Mystica, Layia notices a strange connection between them. Mystica reveals she knows secrets about Ed's past and warns him that his kindness is needed more than ever. Layia overhears enough to wonder about Ed's true story, but Ed gently reassures her that some secrets will be told in time. The chapter ends with Layia curious about what Mystica knows and excited to learn more on her journey with Ed.
Layia was still grinning as she stood in the soft grass of the village square, practicing the warrior’s bow. Ed patiently watched, his battered helmet gleaming in the sunshine and his long shadow stretching beside her. Lilly and Siri sat on the edge of the fountain, clapping when Layia dipped her head just right.
“Very noble,” Ed said, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. “A true warrior always shows respect before a challenge.”
Layia puffed out her chest. “Am I ready for the next move?”
Before Ed could answer, a low, soft voice drifted from behind the old willow tree. “It seems the Warrior is teaching new heroes.”
Everyone turned. There, half-hidden in the silver leaves, stood a stranger. She wore a cloak woven with shimmering threads and her dark hair tumbled about her face like a waterfall at midnight. Her eyes seemed both gentle and wise, and though she smiled, there was something mysterious about her.
Siri scooted close to Lilly, whispering, “Who’s that?”
Ed stepped forward and bowed deeply. “Mystica. It’s been a long time.”
Layia’s mouth popped open. How did Ed know her? She glanced at her siblings. Lilly shrugged, just as puzzled.
Mystica’s eyes lingered on Ed. “The Magpie’s Nest was quite a riddle. Still solving puzzles, I see?”
Ed chuckled. “Some things never change.”
Layia tugged on Ed’s sleeve, unable to hold her question any longer. “How do you know her? Is she a warrior too?”
Mystica knelt down, her cloak sparkling in the sunlight. “I knew Ed long before he wore that helmet,” she said softly. “Once, he helped me find my way when I was lost.”
Ed looked away, his face turning thoughtful. Mystica continued, “He has a gift for helping those who need it—even when he’s not sure where he belongs himself.”
Layia wondered what it would feel like to be lost. She wanted to ask more, but something about the stranger’s voice made her heart flutter. “Do you know secrets about Ed?” she whispered.
Mystica smiled kindly. “Everyone holds a few secrets, little warrior. Some are ready to be told, and others wait for the right moment.”
At that moment, Galen the Metalsmith strode over, calling out, “Ed, I’ve polished your helmet as best I can. Next time, let’s keep it away from thieving birds!”
Everyone laughed, even Mystica. The spell of mystery was broken, but Layia couldn’t stop thinking about Ed’s past. She looked up at Mystica, who nodded as if she understood.
“Remember, Layia,” Mystica said quietly, “courage isn’t just for warriors. It’s for anyone with a kind heart.”
As the sun warmed her cheeks, Layia felt a new burst of courage bubbling inside. Ed ruffled her hair, his eyes twinkling. “There’s plenty of time for warrior lessons,” he promised. “But some stories are best learned slow, from those you trust.”
Layia nodded, hugging Lilly and Siri close. Mystica faded into the crowd, her cloak glinting one last time. Layia’s head spun with questions and dreams of adventure. She knew the day would come when Ed’s secrets would be shared—and she’d be ready, warrior’s bow and all.
