Chapter 2: The Missing Helmet

Layia wants to become a warrior and tries to impress Ed by finding him a present. She enlists her shy brother Siri and strong sister Lilly to help search the village. When the metalsmith, Galen, tells them Ed’s old helmet is missing, the children sneak around looking for clues. They discover a trail of shiny feathers leading behind the bakery, where a family of magpies has taken the helmet for their nest. Ed helps them gently retrieve it and shares a warm moment with the children, promising to show Layia her first sword move.

Layia’s mind whirled with ideas as she skipped away from the square, her shoes barely touching the grass. She wished with all her heart to impress Ed the Warrior—maybe even learn how to swing a real sword someday. After all, she’d already survived an upside-down tree! She needed to do something brave, something special.

She dashed home and burst into the kitchen. Her big sister Lilly, who was whisking a bowl of eggs, looked up in surprise. “Layia, you’re breathless! Did the tree win this time?”

Layia grinned. “No, but I met a real warrior! I want to give Ed a present, something a warrior needs. Will you help?”

Lilly’s brow furrowed thoughtfully. “What does a warrior need?”

Siri, their shy little brother, peeked around the pantry door. He whispered, “Does he need a helmet? Warriors always have shiny helmets.”

Layia’s eyes sparkled. “Perfect! The metalsmith—Galen—might have one.”

Together, the three siblings hurried to Galen’s workshop. The air inside smelled of warm iron and coal. Galen, broad-shouldered and cheerful, waved them in.

“Looking for something special today?” he rumbled.

Layia bounced on her toes. “Do you have a helmet for Ed? I want to surprise him!”

Galen’s bushy brows rose. “I did, but it’s vanished! I’d set his old helmet aside to polish, and now it’s nowhere. I reckon something sneaky took it last night.”

Lilly put her hands on her hips. “Sneaky, like a fox?”

“Or a squirrel?” Siri whispered.

Galen scratched his beard. “Not sure. All I found was a trail of shiny feathers on the floor.”

Layia’s heart leaped. A mystery! “We’ll find it, Mr. Galen,” she declared. “Come on, team!”

The children followed the trail of feathers out the workshop door, across the lane, and behind the bakery where the morning bread was cooling. There, on a low branch, was a sight that made Layia giggle: a nest shimmering with bits of string, foil, and right in the middle—Ed’s battered, dented old helmet, now home to a family of squawking magpies.

Siri tugged at Layia’s sleeve. “How will we get it back?”

Before Layia could answer, Ed himself appeared, smiling at the high nest. “Looks like my helmet’s made some feathered friends,” he chuckled softly. “Mind if I join the rescue?”

With Ed’s gentle help, and a handful of bakery crumbs to distract the birds, Layia and her siblings carefully untangled the helmet. The magpies chirped, but no one was hurt, and soon the helmet was back in Ed’s hands, dusty but shining in the sun.

Ed knelt down, placing a huge, warm hand on Layia’s shoulder. “Thank you, brave adventurers. Sometimes, helping means solving little puzzles together.”

Layia beamed, pride bubbling in her chest. “Can you show me how to wear a helmet, Ed? And maybe…a warrior move?”

Ed winked. “First, you need to learn the warrior’s bow.” He showed Layia how to stand tall, feet apart, and dip her head with respect—a move full of promise and adventure yet to come.

The children cheered. The helmet, a little crooked, gleamed with a new story. And as the sun rose higher over Willowbrook, Layia knew that her journey to become a warrior was just beginning.
