The air in the ancient grove hung thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a perfume that usually soothed my senses. But today, it felt heavy, cloying, a suffocating blanket that pressed against my chest. Kaelen walked beside me, his usual easy stride replaced by a tense, measured pace. His gaze, normally sharp and observant, darted nervously into the shadowed depths of the trees, as if expecting an ambush in every rustle of leaves.
"Are you sure about this, Elara?" he asked, his voice low, a rumble of unease in the quiet. "This place… it feels wrong."
I nodded, though a knot of apprehension tightened in my own stomach. The journal had spoken of this grove, of a place where the veil between our world and the deeper currents of power was thinnest. Elder Maeve had confirmed it, her eyes, ancient as the stones themselves, holding a solemn knowledge. "The heartwood remembers," she'd said, her voice like the creak of old branches. "And in its memory, the path to the source lies."
