The morning after the messages arrived felt like a dream, a hazy, disoriented awakening. Sunlight, usually a cheerful intrusion, seemed to filter through the blinds with a forced, sickly quality. The protagonist’s room, once a sanctuary, now held a subtle tension, as if the air itself remembered the tremor of fear that had gripped them at midnight. The wooden box sat on the bedside table, a silent, tangible testament to the impossible. The photograph, with its faded ink and the ghost of a shared smile, was a constant, nagging presence.

Breakfast was a familiar ritual, yet it felt alien. The clatter of spoons against ceramic, the murmur of the news on the television, the comforting aroma of toast – it all seemed to be happening on the other side of a thick pane of glass. Their mother, usually a whirlwind of cheerful efficiency, moved with an almost imperceptible hesitation. Her smile, though present, didn't quite reach her eyes. It was a subtle shift, a hairline fracture in the facade of their ordinary life, but to the protagonist, it was glaringly obvious.

“Sleep well, darling?” her mother asked, her voice a little too bright as she placed a plate of scrambled eggs in front of them.
